On Dec 18th, 2009, the oil painting Church in Paris by Chinese master Liu Haisu (1896~1944) was sold at RMB 9,072,000 (commission included) at the XiLing 2009 Autumn Auctions, which broke the sale record for the artist. Liu’s another work Snowscape in Luxembourg, which was drawn in the same year as Church in Paris, was also sold at a high price of RMB 8,848,000.
In the section of “The First Generation of Chinese Oil Painters”, Liu Haisu’s two paintings, which were drawn in Europe and enlisted by authoritative publications, arouse a sharp fight between bidders. Starting from RMB 1,200,000, the hammer prices finally reached RMB 9,072,000 and RMB 8,848,000 respectively. Liu’s works have never reached RMB 5,000,000 before. Since most of Liu’s paintings were collected by art galleries, few of his works can be found in the art market, thus his early oil paintings were much more precious than other works. But the overflow of counterfeits made the price of Liu’s paintings much lower than other masters like Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian. There is no doubt that this record at XiLing Auction increased the market value of works by masters.
In this auction, the oil painting and sculpture sale offered over 170 works by different art schools, such as the first-generation oil painter Liu Haisu, Lin Fengmian, Guan Liang, realism school artists Chen Yifei, Ai Xuan, Leng Jun; popular artists like Zhou Chunya, Wang Guangyi, Ding Yi etc. The total sales volume of this special auction reached RMB 56,870,000, with a high bought-in rate of 86.4%, which proved the steady value of classical works advocated by XinLingYinShe (XiLing Society of Seal Arts).
Pre:RMB 39.76 million, a new record for the “Yangzhou Painting School”
