Xiling Yinshe 2017 Autumn Auction witnessed a successful sale of the oil painting Vased Flower which was painted by Wu Dayu around the 1950s at the price of RMB 41.4 million from the starting bid of RMB 12 million. The practice was recognized as an affirmation and salute by collectors to this art master who has once been forgotten by Chinese art history. Now, this year, we are honorable to see another masterpiece painted by him in his Shanghai studio. According to statistics, there are 149 Wu Dayu’s paintings left and rarely seen in the market, so every piece of his work comes beyond estimates.  

In his last ten years, Wu painted the best abstract paintings in his life, during which this lot was made. And his works were always in small size at this period more or less attributed to his poor life. Wu never signed on his works nor write dates as he believes ‘what matters should be expressed by the painting itself’.
